The program created by the Foundation for Active Rehabilitation consists
of many elements. Most important are:
Enrolment
FAR instructors (in most cases disabled people using wheelchairs but self-reliant
and well rehabilitated) visit hospitals and rehabilitation institutions
in the whole country. They are trying
to convince patients after spinal cord injury to be "active"
in rehabilitation. They recommend camps organized by FAR. They also introduce
methods of active rehabilitation to medical staff.
Introduction
On first level "training and rehabilitation" camps, also called
"introductory" camps participants learn basic practical abilities
and information they need in life to come. They learn: to dress up, to
transfer to and from the wheelchair, to move within the home and out of
doors, through the city - to overcome natural and architectural barriers.
To improve physical strength and independence, they take part in sport
activities (the technique
of moving in the wheelchair, general physical conditioning,
archery, table tennis, swimming).
Continuation
People in wheelchairs can count on the Foundation's help not only during
the camps. FAR coordinators run local information posts and training groups.
Other elements of the Foundation's program are specialized training sessions
- computer courses giving disabled people the base for further learning
and work, and also courses of active rehabilitation designed for all those
who work with people after spinal injury: doctors, nurses and physiotherapists.
With its activities the Foundation for Active Rehabilitation fills
in a gap between the hospital and home and enables people in wheelchairs
to return faster to active life.
